In this video, Sam takes a look at the insanely high gain Stone Deaf distortion with parametric filter EQ. Check it out here: https://www.pmtonline.co.uk/stone-deaf-warp-drive-high-gain-parametric-filter
The Warp Drive is a pretty epic distortion pedal, which features an ultra-saturated, cascading gain stage circuit, so it’s perfect for players wanting those super high gain metal tones. But because it also features an onboard paracentric EQ, the tone range on offer is pretty extreme, you get anything from crunchy, mid-filled Black Sabbath-like drive, through ’90’s style high gain scoop, right up to more modern sounding metal tones. Plus, there’s also a built-in noise gate to tame any mushiness and tighten up rhythm playing.
The Warp knob dials in the amount of gain, things can get pretty crazy pretty quickly, so definitely back that off a bit to start off with. Next is the Gate control, which adjusts the threshold of the built-in noise gate, allowing you to tame those higher gain settings without choking their tone, and this is toggled on and off via a footswitch. The balance knob adjusts the pedals overall output volume, with unity gain at 12 o’clock, and then we’ve EQ controls.
As mentioned earlier, the Warp drive features a paracentric filter EQ, which allows you to dial in a certain frequency to either boost or cut, allowing for pretty powerful tone sculpting. The Frequency knob ranges from 35 hertz up to 6 kilohertz, and the Cut/Boost knob controls by how much your selected frequency is enhanced or reduced, with a plus or minus 20 db range. Finally, there’s a 5-position bandwidth selector which sets the Q factor of the boost or cut, ranging from needle thin to fat bandwidths. It’s also possible to connect an expression pedal to control some of these elements, turning the Warp Drive into a distortion wah or phaser, but do bear in mind, it will only work with the optional Stone Deaf EP-1 active expression pedal.
Hand made right hear in the UK, the pedal itself looks great with it’s retro sci-fi, B-movie style graphics and it’s got a really sturdy solid housing to withstand life on your pedalboard. Finally, there’s a true bypass foot switch and the pedal can be powered by either a 9 volt power supply or a battery.
