The J-45's woody, warm, clear voice has sung out on hundreds of classic records, and too many musicians to count have hung their hopes for a successful gig on its sloped shoulders. For that reason, Gibson's best-selling acoustic has a earned a reputation as a workhorse guitar, and deservedly so! It sounds great, and its styling is simple and elegant. If you need to roll up your sleeves and get the job done in the studio or on the stage, there are few guitars more dependable than the J-45.
But, what happens when the J-45 punches out of work and wants to get all gussied-up and look fancy for a night on the town? Enter the J-45 Vine Custom, proof that the J-45 looks and sounds absolutely stunning when arrayed in evening finery. It's awfully difficult to design an ornate guitar that looks as tasteful as this one, but the Gibson Montana design team has managed to imbue the J-45 Vine Custom with an air of quiet dignity that practically demands cosmetic appointments fit for a king. The end result is a guitar that turns heads without trying to--the epitome of effortless grace.
Of course, whenever something looks effortless, it's usually the product of hours and hours of effort, and this guitar is no different. The geniuses at Gibson clearly spent untold hours getting every little thing right. The level of detail that went into the abalone and mother-of-pearl vine inlays on the fretboard alone is truly staggering, and the designers' obsessiveness resulted in a memorably mesmerizing look. Using a Richlite fingerboard was also an inspired decision, because composite materials like Richlite doesn't move because of humidity! So, you can rest secure knowing that your guitar's beauty (and collectability) will remain intact! The multi-ply binding with abalone on the top complements the darker autumn burst perfectly, the figured mahogany neck is subtle yet stunning, and the engraved Grover tuners are a nice touch (they also hold their tune forever!).
But, beneath all that beauty, this is still a J-45--in fact, this one has been souped-up with mystic rosewood back and sides, a bone nut and saddle, and scalloped x-bracing to give it a truly singular voice. It has the warmth and clarity we expect from a J-45, but the rosewood gives it a glossy top-end sparkle and deep, piano-like lows. Of course, a J-45 that sounds like nothing else demands an electronic system that can replicate its one-of-a-kind tone accurately, so Gibson has wisely chosen to equip the J-45 Vine Custom with a crystal-clear LR Baggs VTC pickup. You have to keep a special axe like this safe, too, so it comes with a sturdy Gibson hardshell case!
The Wildwood team is proud to offer our exceptional customers such a fresh take on a legendary model, and we hope you find its sweets sounds and looks as inspiring as we do!
