The Gibson Memphis ES-355 is considered to be the ultimate offering in semi-hollow electric guitars. The original debuted in 1958 as the top of the line semi-hollow with high end aesthetic upgrades and feature set. The headstock featured a split-diamond headstock inlay rather than the smaller crown inlay, in addition to a multi-ply binding. Another difference between it’s ES-335/345 brethren was the use of ebony for the fretboard, resulting in what was considered a “smoother” sound at the time. (The reissues now offer Richlite, which is remarkably comparable). The ES-355 was available with a Vibrola vibrato unit or a Bigsby vibrato tailpiece and was available with a stereo output, along with the same Varitone tone filter circuity found on the ES-345. Some notable ES-355 aficionados include Alex Lifeson of Rush and of course, the legendary B.B. King, recognized for his 355 known as “Lucille”. The Wildwood Staff is delighted to share our love for these incredible instruments, and invite you to check them out below!
