This Pelham Blue beauty has delightful vintage-style resonance and a special sort of bass response. It's brawny but articulate, like a weightlifter that reads Plato in his spare time. Dodgy metaphors aside, this Explorer's low end produces a strong fundamental that provides an excellent foundation for everything else this guitar does no matter what pickup position you're in. It also has a round, piano-like attack!
Speaking of pickups, let's talk about the neck position! It has the aforementioned thick basses to go with broad, powerful, woody resonance. There's also just a hair of sizzle in the high-end, which gives single-note lead lines just the right amount of bite. This sort of tone gives thick chordal riffs immense mass and weight while maintaining superb note separation and clarity.
The bridge pickup is awesome, too! It has a slightly growlier attack, and the low-end is tighter and bolder. The mids are still vast and all-encompassing, but there's a bit more push in the upper end of the midrange spectrum. The high-end sits about halfway between sweet, smooth PAF tone and bright, bell-like chime; in other words, bright enough to sound like a sunny day without any accompoanying high-end harshness.
If you're looking for an Explorer that inspires you to play wailing blues AND heavy, Sabbathian riffs (and just about anything in between!), look no further!
