In this video, Sam's taking a look at the awesome Stone Deaf Tremotron, a dual analog Tremolo with digital controls, check one out here: https://www.pmtonline.co.uk/stone-deaf-tremotron-analog-tremolo
The Tremotron is pretty unique in the world of tremolo pedals. Utilisiling a Voltage Controlled Amplifier, or VCA, it allows for extremely fast, sharp trem effects such as ring modulation, but also delivers that lush, smoother sounding, classic opto tremolo tone. It’s features high quality analogue circuitry and signal path to deliver a lovely warm, vintage sounding tremolo, but with the added convenience of digital controls and the ability to save up to 4 preset settings. What really sets the Tremotron apart from other similar pedals though is it’s secondary LFO, meaning you can effectively run two separate tremolo effects at once, each with their own individual waveform, depth and speed, allowing you to get really creative.
There are still a couple of analogue controls, the first being a level knob to adjust the overall output volume, and the second a low pass tone control, which rolls off the high end frequencies to create a more muffled, under water sounding effect. The three digital controls adjust the depth, rate and wave shape of the tremolo. There’s a wide selection of waveforms to choose from, sine, square, triangle wave etc, and some of these waves can also be combined, giving you a huge range of different options to play with.
To activate the secondary LFO, just press down on one of the 3 digital controls and you’ll noice a second red led appear. This now means that the primary tremolo settings are displayed by the green LED’s and the secondary effect by the RED’s. These can either be layered in unison, by setting all the controls the same, in which case, the LED’s will appear orange, or each tremolo circuit can have completely separate waves, depths and rates, meaning you can create some really interesting tremolo and modulation effects.
Next up there’s a tap tempo switch to set the speed, and a tap division button which splits that tempo into either quavers, dotted quavers, triplets or semi-quavers, and this button is also used to save your favourite settings to one of the 4 presets. You can cycle through those saved presets by pressing both the bypass and tap tempo switches at the same time.
The pedal itself feels really high quality, solidly made and nice and tough for life on your pedal board, it looks really cool with it’s funky skull themed artwork, there’s a 9 volt dc input as the pedal can’t run on batteries, and if it wasn’t versatile enough for you, there’s standard expression pedal and MIDI inputs, so you can control parameters and tempo externally.
