Once again, Master Builder Greg Fessler has crafted us an absolutely stunning Jazzmaster! This serial weighs in at only 7.63 pounds, but it is absurdly resonant --unplugged, it's one of the loudest Jazzmasters I've ever played. The midrange is my favorite part of this guitar. It's as dense and woody as an old-growth forest, and as warm as a roaring fire on a cold Rocky Mountain night. In the high-end, it has a bell-like, chiming top-end resonance that gives the dry, warm midrange a glossy sheen. Mr. Fessler has managed to keep the bass response exceptionally articulate despite its beefiness. Those big lows receive a boost from the neck pickup, and they pair nicely with its natural low-midrange warmth and upper-mid quack. The neck pickup has a more transparent, airy sound to the trebles, while the bridge pickup has a brighter, lusher high end. Beneath the beautiful, glassy highs, the bridge pickup produces tight lows and biting midrange.
This sort of frequency response means that this Jazzmaster performs with great distinction in higher-gain settings. The lush high-end produces lots of beautiful, crunchy even-order harmonics when plugged into an overdriven amp, which results in a sweet, singing tone. Of course, it sounds great clean too, thanks to its expressive midrange and touch-sensitivity. I could get all sorts of different sounds by altering my technique and varying my attack, and having so many dynamics at my disposal really opened up my lead playing. This guitar's superb balance and clarity also brought some nifty rhythm work out of me--it seems to beg for soulful chord melodies and voice leading a la players like Hendrix, Steve Cropper and Curtis Mayfield. Finally, its vocal midrange inspired me to play lots of simple melodic figures, which are a delight thanks to its endless sustain. Anyone seeking a world-class Jazzmaster will love this Fessler creation!
The Man Behind the Tone
Greg Fessler came to the Fender Custom Shop in 1990 and worked his way up through the ranks as an apprentice. He assisted with the Robben Ford signature line of guitars, eventually became the sole builder of those instruments, and finally wound up becoming Ford’s personal guitar-maker. Fessler has built one-off Stratocaster and Telecaster models for a host of players, including Joe Bonnamasa, Jeff Healey, Hank Marvin, John Mayer, Rhonda Smith, Neil Schon and Pete Wentz. Fessler’s remarkable abilities have earned him accolades from many Fender artists and discerning customers worldwide, and every instrument he builds exemplifies the meticulous attention to detail and intense commitment it takes to earn the title of Master Builder.
