One of the greatest treasures in all of guitar-dom is an ES-335 from 1958--their first year of their production. Back then, a semi-hollow guitar was a newfangled invention, and it took the guitar world by storm as it delighted players with its brighter tone and--more importantly--feedback-resistant construction. Nowadays, one of those original 1958 models will cost you an arm, a leg, and a kidney, so the kind folks at Gibson Memphis have produced these excellent reissues! The 1958 ES-335 Premiere is a particularly fitting tribute to an iconic historic instrument because Gibson has pulled out all the stops to replicate the tone and aesthetic of the originals.
The baseball bat neck has an unbound rosewood fretboard--just like the first few 335s that came off the line in Kalamazoo--and its chunky shape reminds me of some of my favorite vintage Les Paul Juniors. But, the true-to-vintage vibe doesn't end there, because Gibson wasn't content with vintage looks--they wanted it to sound vintage, too! They put the Adirondack spruce bracing and the maple centerblock through a thermal engineering process that gives the wood a similar chemical composition to a real '58! The Adirondack bracing also imparts a woody, percussive thwack that helps it cut through a mix while remaining musical.
From there, two Memphis Historic Spec humbuckers give you rich, warm bass response, sweet highs, and woody mids. They also have the sort of vintage-style airy, open top-end that is difficult to find in modern instruments! Overall, these guitars sound rich and three-dimensional without being overbearing--a truly difficult balance to strike!
We are proud to present this reissue of the holy grail of semi-hollows--the 1958 ES-335. We know it will inspire you just as its brethren have inspired electric guitarists across the world over its storied sixty-year history.
