Ordinarily, we try to be a considerate human being as we go about my day in the workplace, but this ES-335 made us put our empathy aside and play blues licks at eardrum-rattling volumes early in the morning. This ES-335 is simply so delightful that one cannot help but play it loud. It has incredible clarity that invites you to heap the gain on with a shovel and bask in the glorious overtones that pop out of the speaker. We were able to get great note separation on heavy power chords with the fifth in the bass and seven chords when playing through a gain-y Friedman Small Box Combo. Because it has such superb note separation, this serial is GREAT for mellow jazz excursions in the harmonic multiverse!
The bridge pickup is quite fun! It has that classic sparkly, sunny treble response we expect from the Memphis Historic Spec humbuckers, but it also has the sort of beefy bass response that whomps you in the gut. So, single-note lines have plenty of punch and bite, but they never approach harshness even you dig in. This guitar also has just the right combination of sparkle and crunch for rhythm work!
Frankly, the neck pickup has NO RIGHT to sound as fat AND clear as it does. While the bridge pickup's lows are more muscular, the neck pickup's bass response is deep and warm, with more of a woody, vintage character. The highs also have more of a sweet, singing timbre, and you can hear a strong, powerful fundamental in the low mids. This sort of frequency response makes the neck pickup tremendously inspiring for bombastic thick riffs and warm jazz tones. Also, single note lines have an incredible amount of thickness and mass!
Anyone looking for an ES-335 that excels in just about every regard will love this awesome 2019 model!
