Bassist for KÅ by Cirque du Soleil and Elixir Strings artist Derek Jones breaks down controlling the rake with your right hand and muting with your left in this short bass tip. Learning to “rake” across the strings and mute certain notes while fretting others is a great way to add a little more bounce and funk to your bass grooves. String raking and string muting gives a percussive edge and rhythmic interest to your parts, no matter what style you play.
With some practice, you’ll soon have this two-part technique down and be adding groove to your bassline. Derek’s go-to bass strings are nickel plated steel with NANOWEB Coating for their feel and long tone life. Learn more: https://www.elixirstrings.com/products
