On this week’s Academy of Tone, Thomas and Kai are really going full-on in stereo mode to bring you a fully-fledged AMP1 stereo system setup with incredible tones, options, and levels of control!

Over the years, we’ve been asked so many times how to create a setup using both AMP1s: the Mercury and the Iridium edition TOGETHER! Well, you’ll be surprised to learn that it’s not actually that hard to do.

To build the most powerful and flexible rig using both AMP1 editions – and therefore having access to all four channels on the AMP1 Mercury Edition and the AMP1 Iridium Edition – we need a loop switching device with a minimum of two FX loops. There’s plenty of these units out there on the market, so for the show, the guys will be using the Boss MS-3 and the Line 6 HX Effects as examples (other units like the Line 6 Helix and HX Stomp will also work, as they have MIDI capability and at least two FX loops!).

Luckily, these devices also happen to ship with templates that allow you to quickly set up for use with two amps, and it is also documented in their respective user manuals. The looper switching system will let Thomas and Kai easily switch between the Mercury and the Iridium, but, because we’re going to be using two amps anyway, we thought we’d used both power amps for a stereo setup too!

The next thing that came to mind is using a multi effects processor that provides stereo effects and pre-effects. Such a device would normally be used in the four-cable method, but it could also be programmed to switch between the Mercury and the Iridium. This is where we get the “7-cable method” from, as it’s two amps in the equation! It’ll really boggle your minds to see how many options you can have from a setup like this.
