The Fender Nocaster has one of the best backstories in rock and roll history, but we often treat its predecessor, the Broadcaster, as a mere footnote. You see, in 1950 Leo Fender finished his first batch of electric guitars and christened them "Broadcasters." Upon learning that the Gretsch Corporation had a drum kit called the Broadkaster, Leo decided to rename his guitar. The only problem was that he had already ordered a bunch of decals that said "Fender Broadcaster!"
Ever the pragmatic man, Leo simply snipped the "Broadcaster" part off the label and sent his creations off into the world. The Nocaster legend was born. But, before Leo started snipping labels, Fender did produce guitars labeled Broadcasters between the fall of 1950 and February of 1951. Now that Gretsch and Fender are united under the same family tree, it seems only right that the Fender Custom Shop should celebrate the seventieth anniversary of the Broadcaster with a spectacular reissue like the guitar pictured here!
