A drummer is often required to cover a range of drum and percussion sounds, all in one gig. Staying faithful to the band’s studio recorded track, or staying faithful to the original song your covering can require additional sounds, such as hand claps, cowbells, chimes and shakers – yet it’s not always possible to take all those instruments to a gig. By using a Roland drum module and a trigger pad, any additional sound you need can be played from one unit.
Hybrid drumming combines technology with acoustic drums so you can reinforce and complement your acoustic drum sound by adding electronic sounds. More drum sounds, improved sound quality, higher production values for your performance—with hybrid... the possibilities are endless.
In this video, a TM-1 trigger module, KT-10 kick trigger pad and PD-108 mesh head trigger pad are set up alongside a high-end acoustic drum set. The acoustic drums are purely acoustic sounds, while the trigger module performs any sound or sample the drummer needs for the groove or song.

HOW WE RECORDED THE SOUND:
The Roland electronic drum module sound is sent directly to powered PA speakers. A microphone is placed in front of these speakers to record the amplified sound in an attempt to show the sound as it would be heard by the audience when using a typical PA system used in small venues and street performances.
The drum module sound from the PA speakers is muted, using the recording mixing desk, to show the acoustic sound only during the performance for easy comparison of the hybrid sound on/off.
Recorded at Kore Studios, London, March 2019
