I owe Masterbuilder Ron Thorn a thank-you card for building this spectacular Sea Mist Green Thinline Telecaster, because it absolutely made my day. When a truly great luthier like Ron builds a semi-hollow instrument, they imbue it with acoustic-like touch-sensitivity. When you play with a light touch, it has a smooth, woody, open sound. When you dig in, all sorts of rich overtones start to pop out of the midrange and the highs, sort of like how a great Martin hulks when the top really gets moving. That dynamic is on full display here. This Thinline Tele is incredibly responsive to your touch, and it makes for a remarkably expressive playing experience.
And that's not even getting into the pickups! Ron equipped it with two Lollar Gold Foils, which give it a sound unlike any other Custom Shop Fender I've plugged in. They're sort of like P-90s that were raised by a pack of junkyard dogs. Their lows are warm and rich, their midrange is present but transparent, and the highs are crystalline and sparkly. In the bridge position, you'll find rounded lows, full midrange, and serious sizzle and chime in the highs. For snarling rock and roll, rockabilly, or country, it's a killer sound. In the neck position, you'll find deep lows, throaty mids, and a good amount of sparkle in the highs. What's shocking is how clear the neck pickup is despite its rich sound. Chalk it up to Fender Custom Shop witchcraft!
Anyone seeking a Fender with an inspiring yet seldom-heard sound should check out this Masterbuilt monster from Ron Thorne's bench. I'm sure it will inspire lots and lots of joyous noise.
