Get ready for a trip down memory lane in this episode of Academy of Tone! We're taking a look at the re-issued "amp in a box" pedals from Marshall that have become highly sought after and expensive on the used market.
In 1988, Marshall engineer Steve Grindrod designed the Governor pedal after his iconic all-tube amp JCM 800. This was followed by the Bluesbreaker, Shred Master, and Drive Master in 1992. Thomas was working as sound designer creating products like Hughes&Kettner’s sound machines like Crunch Master, Metal Master, the successors of the Cream Machine and will take us back to this era and explore the background and zeitgeist that led to the creation of these legendary products.
With Thomas' deep understanding of the market and the products that were already available at the time, we'll gain insight into why Marshall's pedals were groundbreaking and became the foundation for boutique pedal makers and the pedal boom that followed. Their simple but effective circuitries continue to be copied and modified to this day, much like the good old Marshall amps.
Thomas will demonstrate the pedals and compare them against the original amps that they were voiced after: Governor vs JCM 800, Bluesbreaker vs JTM 45, and JCM 900 vs Shred Master.
