So let’s not beat about the bush, the Legacy kinda looks exactly like a Fender Strat, right? But seeing as this guitar was designed by G&L founder Leo Fender, the same man who designed the iconic Stratocaster, we think they can probably get away it! With this, the deluxe legacy, G&L take that classic Leo Fender design, but add a couple of his more modern innovations to improve tone and playability.
Depending on which finish you go for, the body is made from either Alder for the block colours, or in the case of the transparent finishes such as this blue burst, it’s made from Swamp Ash, showing off that lovely wood grain. This one’s fitted with a 3 ply pearloid scratch plate, but again this will differ to match the finish on each particular guitar, the blonde for example comes fitted with a more vintage looking single ply white pick guard. Attached to the body is a glossed, bolt-on hard rock maple neck featuring G&L’s super playable Modern classic profile, and this is fitted with 9.5” radius fingerboard made from either a maple or caribbean rosewood fingerboard. The guitar’s got a traditional 25.5” scale length, and we’d say that the neck profile’s not too far off of that of a modern Fender, and even though it’s quite heavily lacquered, it doesn’t feel too sticky, so any Strat fan is instantly gonna feel at home with the Fullerton Deluxe.
Hardware-wise, the guitar features a Leo Fender designed Dual Fulcram tremolo with forged brass saddles, which was designed to feel smoother and more stable when compared to a traditional 6 screw vintage style trem, and up on the headstock there’s a set of high quality G&L 12 to 1 ratio, sealed back tuners. The fingerboard's fitted with 22 medium jumbo frets and there’s also a real bone nut for maximum tone.
Unlike a lot of G&L guitars that are fitted with Leo Fender’s innovative MFD pickups, the Legacy caters for players still hankering after the tone of his original Strat, so instead, it’s been fitted with more traditional alnico pickups. There’s 3 CLF-100 single coils fitted at the neck, middle and bridge positions and they run through a standard 5-way selector switch, a volume control and G&L’s PTB tone system. Now this differs from the traditional Strat style dual tone controls which, instead giving you separate controls for Treble and Bass.
