An audio interface is a must have bit of gear for any budding producer, composer, singer-songwriter or podcaster. Essentially an external sound card for your computer, it expands the connectivity, allowing you to connect different types of microphones and instruments so you can make recordings using software such as GarageBand, Cubase, Ableton or Logic.
They’re usually connected to a computer via USB or Thunderbolt if you’re using an Apple device, and as well as offering mic and instruments inputs, they also feature outputs to connect headphones and a pair of monitor speakers so you can hear back what you’re playing and recording, meaning that whatever audio interface you do end up choosing, it will effectively become the main hub of your recording setup.
In this beginners guide to audio interfaces, we explain how all of their most common features work and we jargon bust some of the more confusing technical terms explaining things such as sample rates and latency. So whether you're looking to just start recording songs or a podcast in your bedroom, or you need to record a full band in a studio, hopefully this audio interface buying guide can help you decide the best option for your particular needs.
