One of the most hotly-anticipated albums of the year has finally been released and, well… he’s done it again, hasn’t he? John Mayer has a proven track record of capturing the attention of musicians in every corner of the globe when he decides to release new material, and it’s often met with both immeasurable acclaim and slander in equal measure.
Though divisive, he’s perpetually proven himself to be the most talked about and honest musician in modern times, and it’s only natural for us guitar-slingers to crane our necks and wear out the zoom-motors on our phones and computers, trying desperately to analyse what’s going on in with the gear, whether it be studying the pedalboards, amp backlines or fawning over the latest PRS & Martin 6-strings to grace his stage.
In celebration of the new “Sob Rock” album, we decided to take a closer look at what set his (at the time of recording) latest single apart, with a very obvious homage to classic 80s lead guitar tone. If nothing else, it was this tone and retro production style that captured everybody’s imagination, and we’re all eager to see whether this sets the tone (yes, that was intentional) for the rest of the album. Of course, by the time you’re seeing this, we’ll all know the answer to that for certain!
Jack does his best to break down the philosophy of this tone, why it’s so captivating to us all, and how you can get in the ballpark yourself. The individual components are only half the story - the rest is of course, using it effectively to propel the guitar right to the forefront of the song, making it as lyrical as possible. That’s exactly what Mayer does so perfectly, and why his name won’t be off anybody’s lips, anytime soon.
What do you think of the new “Sob Rock” album? Are you of the mindset that Mayer is the greatest thing in the guitar world since individually packaged guitar strings, or do you find the whole thing to just be a caricature of days gone by? Let us know, either way, and however strongly, in the comments below!
