People who write about guitars often refer to the ES-339 as the ES-335's little brother, which is a shame, because the ES-339 is a marvelous guitar in its own right. Though it's impossible not to compare the two, the ES-339 is an entirely different beast with a different sonic fingerprint than the ES-335. It may be smaller in stature, but it stands as an equal in the tone department.
Gibson's build emphasizes these natural strengths. The body is made of 3 plies (maple/poplar/maple) to make the ES-339 a gig-worthy dependable workhorse. It also makes the guitar resonate in a three-dimensional, open manner. So, the ES-339 is a remarkably clear, warm-sounding instrument that sounds full yet sculpted.
Speaking of "full yet sculpted:" Gibson's '57 Classic humbuckers. The '57 Classic 'buckers in this guitar do a bang-up job of summoning the magic of those old PAFs from vintage Gibson semi-hollows. The neck pickup is throaty and vocal, with broad midrange plus plenty of bass thump to go with sugary highs. The bridge pickup has punchy midrange that can really snarl when you dig in, tight lows, and plenty of bell-like chime in the highs.
