While the Triple Crown TC-50 is obviously very capable in high gain applications, another genre where it shines is in lower gain, Brit-style Blues sounds. The same touch sensitivity and immediate responsiveness that rock & metal players appreciate translates equally as well to lower gain settings in Ch. 2 & 3 of the TC-50.
With light attack, the amp’s response is fast, yet… notes still bloom while hanging on the edge of clipping. Heavier attack extracts cut, bite and sizzle… while the bloom stays intact.
While Ch. 3 has one more tube preamp gain stage than Ch. 2, both gain channels are incredibly expressive and attentive to your playing and attack variations in the lower gain ranges and maintain their incredibly responsiveness in higher gain settings as well.
In this example, low gain settings in Ch. 3 are further enhanced by the vintage clip and earlier overdrive provided by 6V6 power tubes. Installing 6V6s in place of the stock EL-34 power tubes reduces the wattage by half to approximately 20-25 watts. More important than the lower wattage, the velvet low-end response and unmistakeable treble cut frequencies of 6V6s are able to shine in the Triple Crown at low gain settings.
Experimentation will yield an incredible range of tones from the Triple Crown TC-50, making it an amp players can explore, grow with, and experience new tones from, for years.
Played through a Custom “Saucy” Strat-style guitar into the Triple Crown TC-50 with a Traditional Rectifier 4x12 Slant cab loaded with Celestion Vintage 30s. Recorded with a Shure SM57, Royer 121, the TC-50 built-in CabClone (set to Open-Back) and a Sennheiser stereo room mic. Mixed approximately 35% SM57, 30% Royer 121, 20% CabClone and 15% Room mic.
