After a very limited release in early 2022, Crom is back and part of the regular Caroline Guitar Co lineup! Like their Olympia fuzz from way back, Crom starts with a 4 transistor circuit with diode clipping (inspired by the 70s Supa Tonebender) which has a nice sweet spot between Muff and Bender tones. You get silky smooth leads and chunky chords but Crom forges a new fuzz signal path with various controls to maximum its tonal offerings. The Helmet knob controls the output, which is high enough to overcome low gain setting or broken, gated fuzztones.
The Mountain tone knob avoids the common scooped Muff tone stack and opts for a Tweed-style circuit that will interact is pleasing ways with the other controls. The Sword knob alters gain by varying the voltage of the first gain stage and transistor emitter, thus affecting other stages downstream. This method changes more than just gain and really offers a different feel and level of immediacy to the fuzz sounds across the dial.
On the side is the Turbo push button which increases bass response, sustain and output by changing the clipping diodes and components tied to a transistor stage for a wider range of compression and output.
Finally, you can fine tune the feel and decay of the fuzz signal with an internal gate/bias trimmer which takes Crom into starved fuzz territory and opens the doors to staccato riffs and 60s fuzztones.
Caroline Guitar builds the Crom fuzz one at a time in
Columbia, South Carolina and loads it with BC184 Silicon transistors and high quality components and enclosures. Once a limited run, Crom is finally part of the regular lineup. Visit CarolineGuitar.com for info on availability near you!
