I GOT RHYTHM, PART 6
How to build dramatic tension with dotted-quarter syncopations
In this lesson, Guitar World's Senior Music Editor, Jimmy Brown, continues his discussion on rhythm fundamentals with syncopations. This time, the focus is on the sound of the dotted-quarter rhythm (which spans one and one half beats) and the different ways in which it can be conveyed and repeated with anticipated chord changes to create syncopation and dramatic musical tension, via a chain of shifting accents. This is illustrated with examples from well-known artists including Fountains of Wayne, the Cars, Def Leppard, and Rick Springfield.
