When it comes to musical history, if there is one brand that has been at the forefront throughout it's definitely Shure. Shures microphones have an abundant history, pioneering and dominating the microphone market since the 1930s when we saw the first ever Unidyne Microphone.
With the introduction of the Unidyne I capsule in 1939, Shure released the Shure 55, the worlds first ever single element uni-directional microphone. The single element design made these microphones smaller, less expensive and more accessible. Inspired with the design by the Car Grille from the Vintage Car Oldsmobile 6, the 55 dominated the microphone market being the choice for many famous musicians including; Elvis Presley, Hank Williams, Frank Sinatra. As well as being a part of historical moments like Martin Luther Kings 'I Dreamed a Dream Speech'. Evolving over the years but always keeping the core design of the early 55, the Shure 55SH is the perfect ode to this historic microphone!
The SM57 a popular instrument microphone using that Unidyne III capsule, is a staple in musicians kit being used to mic up guitars, drumkits, brass, keyboards or even a choice by vocalists such as David Bowie, Madonna, Dave Grohl as a vocal microphone. The SM58 featuring the Grille on the top provides a fantastic pop filter for vocalists helping to cut out the plosives that come through naturally when singing and providing an indestructible top that protects this mic from heavy use.
Famous for their durability, the SM58s microphones have been put through rigorous tests to push them to the max. Dropped from heights, submerged by water, run over with heavy vehicles and continue to work no matter what they are put through. Not to mention that fantastic Shure sound and clarity, which continues to make these microphones the go to choice for vocalists and musicians all over the world.
Born from the 1970s SM7 microphone, the SM7B released in 1999 and surging in popularity over the last decade has become a popular choice for vocalists for live and studio work. Providing a amazing natural low end and clarity to the recording, these dynamic microphones with their ability to cut out the low end and respond increibly well to the nuance in vocals are now a go to microphone for recording vocals at home or in a studio environment. Not just limited to vocals these awesome microphones have even been used by artists like John Mayer to mic up their guitar cabs at live shows!
There is no denying the impact and important role Shure microphones have played in the history of music and across the whole music industry. These four microphones, each completely unique have a rich and abundant historic part in musical evolution!
