In this video, Sam takes a look at the Keeley Monterey, a not-so-subtle Jimi Hendrix inspired fuzz and univibe pedal, check it out here: https://www.pmtonline.co.uk/keeley-monterey-rotary-fuzz-vibe-pedal
As it’s name and funky artwork might imply, the Monterey from Keeley electronics is a Hendrixy inspired fuzz modulation pedal. Both the distortion and modulation sections can be toggled individually via their corresponding footswitches, and there’s three modulation modes to choose from, so the Monterey offers a pretty wide range of Jimi-like tonal options.
The fuzz section’s pretty straightforward to use, with just an overall output level knob and a control to adjust the amount of fuzzy gain. Similar in tone to a classic Dunlop fuzz face, this channel has been designed around a pair of moderate gain, vintage Fairchild semi-conductor transistors, delivering a nice rich, full sounding fuzz tone, which works well with both single coil and humbucker pickups.
Moving on to the Modulation section, as mentioned earlier, there’s a switch to select either Rotary, Uni-Vibe or Wah modes and controls for Level, Octave, Depth and Rate. In rotary mode, the pedal emulates a classic Leslie speaker cabinet, with the octave knob controlling the volume of the virtual tweeter, therefore increasing high mid and treble frequency response. Vibe mode delivers a lovely rich, vintage univibe style modulation, combining complex phase and tremolo effects, and the wah setting offers a versatile range auto wah and harmonic fixed wah tones. Plus, there’s also the option for connecting an external expression pedal, to control the wah filter sweep with your foot. In both vibe and wah modes, the octave knob blends in either an octave up or octave down pitch shifting effect, or if you leave it at the 12 o’clock setting, no octave effect will be added. Finally, a switch on the back of the pedal allows you to select the order that the two effects sections appear in the signal chain, either fuzz going into modulation or vice versa.
The pedal itself looks fantastic with it’s funky graphics, very similar to Hendrix’s iconic Monterey Strat , it features Keeley’s usual excellent build quality, and a bit boring, but always worth mentioning, the pedal can’t run on batteries so you will need a 9 volt power supply.
