“My pedal board setup consists of a vocal mic (SM Beta 57A) running into a MXR 6 band EQ. From there it goes to a Boss AB-2 switch which I sometimes use to select between a vocal looping microphone and an additional instrument such as a keyboard. From the AB switch it runs to IN 2 of the Infinity. My acoustic guitar (handmade Crosby dreadnought) runs into a Boss TU-2 tuner and into IN 1. I also have a Boss FS-5U pedal attached to the expression input of the Infinity. This gives me the option of muting the loop without stopping playback entirely.
In “Why's That Boy So Mad” I start with a bed track, which is tambourine. On LOOP 1 I lay down a one bar, eighth note rhythm. This requires a very delicate touch as a tambourine loop that's not in time is really apparent. From there I start the song bringing the tambo from LOOP 1 into the choruses. Once I get to the middle break-down I tap the “LOOP 2” peg and begin recording the vocal build. SERIES LOOPS is off so I can keep in time with the tambo track. LOOP 2 is set to x2 in the SYNC MULTI function. Once the first pass of LOOP 2 is almost complete I use the external Pigtronix TRS pedal to arm instant over dubs by tapping the “UNDO” peg. This allows me to jump right into over dubs without having to let the loop pass through an entire cycle or picking it up awkwardly mid-way through.
From here the tricky business is arming the loops and turning them off and on as I need them. A fare bit of time and practice was needed to figure this out. The song ends with a double tap on the “Stop” peg to stop both loops.
