Greatest Rock Jazz Blues Guitar Lick Ever - How To Play - Guitar Lesson Guitar Instruction and Breakdown - Part 1 of 2
Alright so maybe the title is a bit ambitious to say the least. But it is a pretty awesome guitar lick and concept.
Here's the deal ... we usually put the title of the guitar player and the name of the song that we are doing a lesson on. But we wanted to try something a little different ... if only for our own amusement.
So if you are interested in playing along ... take another listen to the opening performance of this lick and try and figure out who the guitar player is that originally created this lick and what CD/song it is from.
If you have a guess ... just write it in the comments below. And do this before you read other peoples comments/guesses and before you watch part two of this lesson.
In part two we will reveal who the guitar player is both in the video and in the description of the video.
We just thought it would be fun to see if anyone could figure out who the guitar player is ... by simply hearing an obscure lick from a very unique player. The only hint we will give is ... it is a guitar player that has a sound all his own ... it has changed slightly over the years ... but the essence of his tone, playing style and touch/attack has almost completely stayed the same through the years.
Hope you all take a stab at it ... it will be fun to see the different players you all hear in the same lick.
Anyway ... a little about this lesson ...
This is a lick I learned a long time ago (ok ... that's kind of a hint) ... I remember first hearing this and it just popping out like a sore thumb. There is so much aggression with a great rock feel. But it doesn't sound like a standard rock lick. And that is due to the rhythmic structure of the lick.
Essentially it is a 9 note phrase that is being repeated (slightly altered). But it is being played as 16th notes. So normally you would have 4 16th notes for each beat ... so if you had an 8 note pattern that repeated itself ... it would start on the 1st note ... then on the 3rd beat it would return to the 1st note of the pattern.
beat one ... 1,2,3,4
beat two ... 5,6,7,8
beat three ... 1,2,3,4
beat four ... 5,6,7,8
but with a 9 note phrase (or any odd number phrase) the phrase gets turned around in a really cool way
beat one ... 1,2,3,4
beat two ... 5,6,7,8
beat three ... 9,1,2,3
beat four ... 4,5,6,7
This is a really REALLY cool concept to make your solos sound unique. And a way to take standard licks that you play all the time and give them new life.
Alright enough yapping ... we plan on diving deeply into this concept on a large series of lessons in the near future ... hope you stick around for it.
Also as a note ... we are excited to be using a new Wampler Euphoria Pedal on this video. I haven't had a lot of time to play with this pedal yet. But what I have heard (and felt) while playing around with it for a little while ... pretty darn impressed. It's hard to find a pedal that is truly touch sensitive ... giving a nice full gain but cleans up well when dialing back the volume on the guitar ... all while not affecting the tone of the guitar much at all.
So to say the least ... I'm liking what I'm getting from it in my shot time spent with it. We will be doing a full review on this pedal and several others in the coming months ... so we hope you stick around for that also.
I hope you enjoy this lesson ...
