On this week’s Academy Of Tone, Thomas and Rich are diving deep into that most delightful of guitar effects: fuzz!
One of the most iconic FX of all time, fuzz has been used to incredible effect by the greatest guitar players of all time for over 60 years… but it all started quite by chance. And we’re so happy it did, because the invention of fuzz pedals led to legendary performances by the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Keith Richards, David Gilmour, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and many more.
Thomas is a huge fan of fuzz himself, and has an enviable collection of fuzz boxes. During the show, the guys will travel through the history of fuzz, talking about the celebrated records and players who’ve helped popularize the effect, and playing and comparing the best of Thomas’s fuzz FX.
We’ll also talk about the tech behind fuzz pedals – there are many different ways to make a fuzz tone, and the materials used in pedals can have vastly different effects on the overall tone – and the best places to put them in your signal chain. A raw, primal effect, fuzz is not always the easiest effect to place into a complicated setup, and Thomas will show what’s worked best for him over the years.
We’ll also look back to the previous week, when Thomas was in Hamburg to video a bunch of delectable vintage guitars, including a few fabled Gibson Bursts! Quite a lot happened behind the scenes during the week, so there’s quite a lot to tell about the trip. And of course we’ll be answering your questions live during the show, so comment in the chat and Thomas and Rich will get to as many as they can!
