As we come to the end of an incredibly exciting week for Gibson guitars, the reception for the new Murphy Lab collection has shown that relic’d guitars are as contentious and exciting as they ever have been. As the undisputed king of ageing a Gibson guitar, Tom Murphy helped to establish his name by working on projects such as the Collector’s Choice series, artfully recreating the minute details of iconic pieces of rock history for limited runs. The rarest and most desirable of all, CC #1, is arguably his magnum opus. Or at least, it was…
We thought it would be fun to show two sides of the Murphy coin - one, a painstakingly accurate recreation of a rock legend. The other, a production line, made to measure, customer-attainable piece of incredible craftsmanship. Two very different guitars, but both with the signature Tom Murphy flare, and iconic Gibson tonal snarl.
There is clearly no winner here, but let us know in the comments which of these two dream Les Pauls would be YOUR choice!
