Calum Graham demonstrates the basics of the thumb-upstroke with and without a thumb pick in this acoustic guitar lesson. By applying the technique to a simple progression - and then adding arpeggios - he shows how it can be used in a musical context. This Elixir Strings artist plays Acoustic Phosphor Bronze with NANOWEB Coating for their tuning stability. Check out our products: https://www.elixirstrings.com/products

While fingerpicking acoustic guitar usually involves downstrokes with your thumb, learning to incorporate upstrokes opens up an array of rhythmic possibilities. Put in the practice and you’ll soon have the thumb-upstroke down!
