On this week’s Academy Of Tone, Thomas is joined by special guest Uli Brodersen to dive into the sweeter, more hidden side of the AMP1 Iridium Edition you can reach by activating Low Gain Mode!
Iridium has become one of the world’s leading metal amps since its release… but it can do a lot more than ‘just’ metal! You’ve already seen the AoT episode where Paul from The Studio Rats shows off Iridium’s softer side, but Uli Broedersen is another great proponent of the amp’s versatility, using Low Gain Mode to create a truly different beast for his own brand of funk, jazz and fusion.
A German guitarist originally from the Saarland – where Thomas and BluGuitar are also from – Uli has made his name as a versatile and reliable sideman for the likes of SNIP and Michael Quast, and he’s also released a bunch of music under his own name.
Thomas and Uli actually began their guitar journeys in a fairly similar way – both getting jazz lessons from the same Saarbrücken-based teacher (Thomas quit after very few lessons due to some disagreements with the teacher, a hardline jazz fanatic… and this also led Thomas hating jazz for the next decade or so!) – but their trajectories since then have diverged significantly. You all know what Thomas has been up to since then, but Uli went on to study jazz guitar in France and Holland (even winning the 1996 solo player prize at the Berklee in Germany Workshop) before resettling in Germany and forging a successful career in the industry.
On the show, Thomas and Uli will jam a bunch of tunes, and they’ll also discuss how Uli came to discover Iridium as an amp that was perfect for his style. Originally, he had been using the amp’s Clean channel along with his own pedals, but a trip to see Thomas has now led to him being able to use the Low Gain Mode on the amp… no more pedals necessary! The guys will explain how Thomas took Uli through this process, and show off some of his key tones. They’ll also show you how to make the most of Low Gain Mode in your own setup!
