On this week’s Academy Of Tone, Thomas and Rich want to maximize their guitar tones without spending any money! Or not much, anyway ;)
So this episode is dedicated to the many small changes you can make to your existing rigs, and also the effects pedals you can bring in to subtly (or not so subtly!) alter the tonal character of your guitar sound.
If you’re not 100% happy with your own guitar sound, you don’t necessarily need to make big changes to improve it. In fact, your dream tone might be one small tweak of a knob or a change of guitar strings away! What Thomas’s decades of experience have shown him is that, to get the best tones, it’s absolutely essential to connect 100% with your instrument to express yourself the way you feel.
And of course, you might need to be a little patient and experiment a bit, as there are many parameters that you can change to get to your very own sweet spot. This could range from your amp settings to your guitar’s pickups, or even to something more drastic like changing your amp or your cabinet. It could also mean putting some extra life into your new amp by adding a choice effects pedal or two to your signal chain.
Thomas will start off by looking at the theoretical background of what can affect your tone. He’ll begin by tweaking his guitar and amp settings, and then move into some pedals that can be used for tonal fine-tuning. And we’ll also get to the following conundrums:
• Should I change my pickups?
• What happens when I change the pickup settings?
• Are my pickups at the right height?
• What are the benefits of Boost, EQ, Compression, Transparent Overdrive and Treble Booster pedals?
• Which are the best FX pedal combinations?
• How will AMP1’s lo-gain mode help me?
• What effect do cables have on my tone?
• Do I need a buffer?
• What effect do different string gauges and materials have on my sound and performance?
