The legacy of Gibson’s “King of the Flat-tops” lives on in the 2018 SJ-200 Standard. From its inaugural appearance in 1937, Gibson’s SJ-200 set an unmatched standard. The 2018 SJ-200 enriches that storied history by paying homage to the iconic tones of yesteryear while giving modern players the convenience they crave.
Tonal Evaluation
This SJ-200 is a big, bold, beautiful strummer! In fact, it reminds me a lot of the vintage SJ-200s I've played in the past with its powerful, tight bass, woody low-midrange, and golden-bright trebles. The piano-like thump on the front end of the note gives way to all sorts of beautiful, bright overtones in the high-end. Despite this lushness, this guitar remains clear thanks to its exceptionally articulate bass response (it's like an incredibly precise cannon!). Such a precise weapon of acoustic doom would prove invaluable in the recording studio, since it sounds big enough to command attention but polite enough not to step on anyone's toes. Anyone searching for a killer SJ with a vintage-style voice will love this serial!
