I've tried many times but this time I think I got pretty close to Ace Frehley's iconic tone on the 1975 Kiss Album Alive! (Alive 1). The tone is extremely bright and a precursor to Slash's Appetite for destruction tone 12 years later. I'm using a 2016 Marshall SLP Super Lead (which is really close to the 1973 Super Lead Ace and Paul most likely used for the overdubs in the Electric Ladyland studio. The cab is a 1960B with a 1973 G12M25 75Hz Pulsonic Greenback, 2x 1975 G12M25 75Hz Kurt Mueller Blackbacks and a 1971 T1281 Greenback. The 1973 speaker is close miked with an EV RE10. Room mic is a 2008 AKG C414BXLII. The guitar is a Nordin Comet Krystin with a Gibson BB2 in the bridge.
I'm also trying to replicate Peter Criss' Alive drum sound. Gear:
1977 Pearl Jupiter 14x5" (mic Sennheiser MD21)
1940s WFL 20x14 kick (mic Shure Beta 52A)
1970s Paiste 15" Medium 2002 hihat (mic ADK Hamburg)
Room mic 2008 AKG C414BXLII.
Paiste cymbals: 24" Giant beat and 20" 2002 medium.
