Before manufacturing his own brand of pedals, Robert Keeley, made a name for himself by modding other manufacturer's pedals. One of his most popular modifications, the Phat mod, was to the Boss BD-2 Blues driver, where he tweaked the components to reduce the noise floor, make the overdrive a little creamier and most importantly, adding a Phat switch to boost bass response.
Keeley’s own Super Phat Mod pedal is a full range, transparent overdrive, that improves upon that original modded BD-2 design to deliver a smooth, articulate and responsive overdrive with a lovely natural breakup. At the heart of the overdrive circuit is a carefully selected Toshiba branded JFET, which responds to your playing dynamics just like an old vintage tube amp would.
Simple to use, there’s just controls for drive, ranging from a slight crunch to full on distortion, a tone control to adjust the EQ, an overall output level knob, and of course, that all important Phat switch, which is great for thickening up a Strat or Tele, without muddying up the tone. The Super Phat Mod feels really high quality and it’ll definitely look the part on your pedalboard with it’s sparkly gold paintwork and retro, Fender Blackface style font. Unlike most of Keeley’s other pedals, this one can run on both a 9 volt battery as well as a power supply.
There’s a reason why the Phat Mod has been one of Robert Keeley’s most popular designs for so long now, so take a quick look with PMTVUK and try one out at your local Professional Music Technology...
