Haven't written any alt-country in a while ... The couple in this story split several months back, because he's on the road a lot and her life just seems to be moving a different direction. She moved to new Orleans just before Hurricane Katrina, and he heads down to find her to make sure she's okay.
This really needs a piano, but I didn't feel like hauling mine up from the basement, and it's just easier for me to record an off-the-cuff demo on guitar.
I used FAWM's the muse tools for titles, and it gave me "atomic words and northern postcards." This is what grew out of that.
C F C
We moved the clock one minute to the right
F G
And decided now it wasn't worth a fight
F C F C/E C
I packed up what little I thought that I'd need
F G C
And made my way out into the night
You told me you found a new job teaching
settled in an apartment in New Orleans
So I figured now I'd make my way down south
And hope that the levee's in one piece
Refrain:
F G
I always thought there's a difference
F G
between desire and wanting what you should
F C G C Am
Sometimes you can tell the two apart
F G C
But me I guess I never could
Bridge:
F G
I remember the time you drove all night
F C
Just to meet me in Chicago
F G
You thought I would reciprocate
F G
but his time never was better than late
Instrumental
But when I finally found you at the shelter
You were tired but thank god not dead
And you asked me what was going through head
I'm still not sure what needed to be said
