Chicago Music Exchange Tone Clone is a series of gear demos in which we recreate the classic sounds of your favorite songs using modern gear. In this edition, Andrew attempts to replicate Jimmy Page’s classic guitar tone on “Whole Lotta Love” from Led Zeppelin II.
Pulling a 1977 Gibson Les Paul Custom (http://goo.gl/D9qPIL) off the wall in place of Jimmy Page’s famous 1960 Black Beauty Les Paul Custom and pairing it with a 1962 Fender Champ Combo (http://goo.gl/LimkXZ) is a realistic simulation of what would have been going on in the studio during the recording. Famous for using cranked small amps and meticulously placed microphones to create natural depth, Page was a pioneer in the sound we have all become so familiar with in rock n’ roll.
As an alternative to this setup, we have grabbed a Fender Tweed Blues Junior, an Emerson EM-Drive, and the Earthquaker Devices Dispatch Master to reproduce this classic tone.
The guitar solo also employs the help of the Dunlop Cry-Baby Wah pedal in both cases.
