In this video we will overhaul an Ampeg VT-22 BEHEMOTH! We will outfit with a 3-prong cord, change out the electrolytics, remove the death cap, and change all the tubes. Then we will test the tone with a Telecaster and show both the clean and dirty tones.
This is one of the loudest and heftiest guitar amps I've ever worked on, bar NONE! This thing is so massive, the earth revolves around IT! Days are measured by how many times the Ampeg VT-22 spins on its axis. The tides are controlled by whichever side of the planet has the most VT-22s at a given time. ...you get the idea. It's massive!
Famously used by the Rolling Stones in the 1970s, these Ampeg V Series - the 120W VT-22 and V-4 head, and the 60W VT-40 and V-2 head - were about the loudest things built for guitar at the time. The four 7027A power tubes produced an easy 120 watts with super sensitive front ends.
These amps also featured lush reverb, Master volumes, and selectable EQ. The tones are versatile - capable of lush, chimey, Fender-like cleans, and, with the midrange properly set, Marshall-like overdrive growl!
This example has the original Eminence squareback speakers.
