The Ampeg 120-watt VT22 combos and V4 heads are most famous for their association with Keith Richards and The Rolling Stones, who used them extensively in the early to mid-1970s on tour. These amps are also a staple of Josh Homme's rig from Queens of the Stone Age and Eagles of Death Metal. Ampeg also made a VT-40 Combo and V-2 Head, which are the 60W versions of this amp. (Confusing, I know!) Ampeg made two different versions of the VT-22 combo and V4 Head in the 1970s. The first version had a standard Channel One and a Channel Two with four switches for changing the center point of EQ controls and attenuating each Channel's input. This Version 1 also had a Master Volume. Version 2 of the amp came out later for the 1977 model year and featured no Master Volume, a "Distortion" control on Channel One, and it had only two switches for changing the center point of the Midrange and Treble EQ. Version two also dropped the Polarity switch from the front panel. This video follows the extensive service and teardown of a Version 2 example and in Part 2 we'll check out a demo of its monstrous tone!
