In this PMT College guitar tutorial, Leigh Fuge from MusicTeacher.com shows us how to play the intro riff from the John Mayer track 'Slow Dancing in a Burning Room'. This is a fun, melodic, finger style riff that showcases John’s use of framing chords with melody lines and chord inversions. Let's get playing!

You can play this with a pick if you remove certain notes which require string skips, but using your
fingers will help re-create the touch sensitive tone of the original. A clean Fender style amp tone
with a slight mid scoop, combined with Mayer’s trademark position 4 Strat tone will help you get in
the right ballpark.
The riff is in the key of E major, but you can also view this as C#m as these two keys share the same
notes. The whole thing is essentially a progression of C#m, A and E, but instead of playing the chords
as you usually would strum a chord, Mayer frames each chord melodically.
