The 12th fret on the guitar is special because it divides each string in half, creating a note that is one octave higher than the tuned string when fretted. Many scales and chord shapes that work on the lower part of the neck can be transposed above the 12th fret using the same (or similar) shapes. Nicholas Veinoglou demonstrates how to play familiar scales an octave up as he shares tips for calculating fret numbers and accounting for open strings.
