Looking for the perfect Marshall amp-in-a-box? Check out their newly re-issued Guv'nor and Drivemaster overdrive pedals.
Originally released in 1988, the Guv'nor was reportedly named after Jim Marshall himself, known around the Marshall HQ as "the Guv'nor". So, how does it sound? As Marshall Product Specialist Steve Smith put it in our exclusive interview (linked below), "The original thinking was to give players the sound of a roaring Marshall stack in a pedal. Although this is quite common now, in 1988, amp-in-a-box pedals didn’t really exist. We were first to the game."
From that original "amp-in-a-box" idea came a circuit that delivered a smooth overdriven sound with just a hint of compression. With its straightforward 3-band EQ and handy effects loop, the Guv'nor proved the perfect choice for guitarists seeking the classic rock and hard rock tones Marshall's known for.
A few years after it's launch, the Guv'nor was discontinued and relaunched as the Drivemaster, featuring that same "amp-in-a-box" circuit, but now in a new housing and without the effects loop. The Drivemaster was joined by the Bluesbreaker pedal, another amp-in-a-box which paid tribute to the legendary combo amp of the same name, and the Shredmaster pedal, Marshall's highest-gain pedal to date.
In this demo, Guitar Center's Steve Lynch plays a Gibson Les Paul Standard into the Marshall Drivemaster into a Marshall 1962 Bluesbreaker combo amp.
