The Universal Audio UAFX Orion Tape Echo offers three different varieties of the iconic Echoplex EP-III used by Eddie Van Halen, Jimmy Page, Brian May and other guitar masters. You can choose from clean, articulate delays via an emulation of a new machine armed with fresh tape (Mint); warm tape saturation from a used model (Worn); or wonderfully wild dropouts and aggressive grit from a heavily worked EP-III (Old). There’s more. One of the tonal glories of the original Echoplex was the sound of its preamp. Orion lets you dial in a simulation of that preamp for everything from subtle crunch to saturated grind.
“Perhaps my favorite feature of the Orion is its three tape modes, which offer different tonal characteristics and capabilities,” says Rob Gueringer (a.k.a. “Freaky Rob”), who has performed with Cardi B, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar and Megan Thee Stallion, among other artists. “The Mint setting sounds very modern and it has a quick attack, Worn produces slightly degraded echo repeats, and Old mode adds saturation and overdrive. All three modes are very cool—it’s down to how, when and where you want to use them.”
If you want to explore crazed, caterwauling pitch-shifted wobbles, Orion can get you there with its Wonk modulation control. Crank up Wonk to warp your echoes into ear-catching modulated textures, or even self-oscillating blackholes of sound. Flex that ’plex!
