A quick trial of some cool Brierley pickups that Mick and I have been working on with a Friedman Smallbox rig courtesy of the Axe-FX II XL+.
The guitar has a 500k Volume pot in it. So it lets a lot of top end through - exactly how I like it. This however can prove a little spiky for single coils so Mick developed a 'Mixed Magnet' single that is perfectly balanced. Mick calls it the "OzRocker Single" and the same mixed magnet principle was used in the Custom Jazzmaster Pickups that I demoed last week. Brierleys again, of course.
The Bridge pickup is an Alnico 4 Modern Vintage, moderate output. Again, it is balanced perfectly to handle the unforgiving tops allowed to filter through a 500k pot but has that sweet, almost classic PAF sound that I love so much. Another winner.
You want? Give Mick a tinkle and tell him that you want the HS1MV set as demoed by yours truly. Sorry is something you won't be.
A Friedman Smallbox is an amp I shall probably never be able to afford, but I know Dave approves of the models offered in the Axe-FX software. I love it because it is uber-dynamic and friendly to the guitar's volume knob. And it has that classic plexi crunch and honk. I think I'll use it on the forthcoming summer tour.
