Arguably the most rock n roll guitar design of all time, the Eastcoast GL range is inspired by the classic single cutaway as made famous by guitar legends such as Jimmy Page, Slash and Joe Perry. Just like the iconic single cutaway, these guitars utilise a pair of humbucking pickups, which offer a higher output and fatter, warmer tones when compared to single coil pickups, making these guitars ideal for guitarists looking to play jazz, classic rock, blues and metal styles.
Based on traditional single cutaway design specs, these are full size guitars featuring a 24.75” scale length, which a little shorter than a standard single coil style guitar, and results in a little less string tension, making string bends slightly easier on the fingers for beginners. The most affordable model in the range, the GL20 features a poplar body with a bolt on maple neck, whereas the bodies and necks of the GL120 and 130 are constructed from Okoume, and feature a fixed, set neck design, so they offer a little more resonance and sustain. All of these models are fitted with bound maple tops, although the GL120 and 130 feature slightly more luxurious looking flamed and quilted maple tops respectively. The necks on these guitars are topped with a bound Purpleheart Amaranth fingerboard which is fitted with 22 frets and trapezoid fingerboard inlays, and as we’ve found with all of the guitars in the Eastcoast range, the GL’s feel lovely to play, they’ve got really comfortable neck profiles, making bar chords and lead lines feel effortless.
Tuning is also accurate and smooth, with the guitars sporting a set of well engineered sealed chrome tuners up on the headstock, whilst down at the other end, as you might expect on a single cutaway style guitar, there’s a fully adjustable tunomatic style bridge and stop bar tail piece. I’ve already mentioned those great sounding pickups, which offer some lovely fat humbucking tones, nice and jazzy when played clean, or fat and ballsy with a bit of overdrive, and these run through a 3 way selector switch, allowing you to use either the pickups individually or a combination of both together. As with traditional wiring, each pickup then has it’s own separate volume and tone control, allowing you to roll off treble frequencies for a more muffled tone if desired.
